The Hermitage

The State Hermitage is one of the largest and most significant art, culture and history museums of Russia and the whole world. The Hermitage’s history originates from the collections of art pieces collected by Empress Catherine II. After her the collection was enriched by Alexander I and Nicolas I. During their rules the collection grew considerably. The First World War stopped the museum’s operation. Several halls of the Hermitage were reequipped as a hospital, and part of the show pieces was evacuated to Moscow. After the Russian Revolution the Hermitage became the state property and the state museum. In the beginning of the Soviet era the Hermitage’s collections were enriched with a large amount of show pieces that previously had been kept in private collections in all the palaces of Saint-Petersburg. Presently the Hermitage’s funds count about 3 million works of art and artifacts of world culture, beginning from the Stone Age and till these days. Among them are archaeological finds, items of primitive culture, jewelry, items made of glass, porcelain, Dutch ware and ornamental stones. The Modern Hermitage is an intricate museum complex. The main exhibition part of the museum occupies 5 buildings situated along the Neva river in the center of Saint-Petersburg. The State Hermitage is included in top-20 most visited art museums of the world.

The Lower Gardens of Peterhof are the most famous part of Peterhof series of parks and palaces. With its magnificent and unique fountains, sculptures and architectural monuments the Lower Gardens made the museum known worldwide. The Lower Gardens were designed in fashionable back then French style, like Versailles residence of French king Louis XVI. The main features of the French formal garden included geometrically calibrated and strict alley planning, elegant and fine featured designs of huge flower beds, topiaries, exquisite pavilions, and rich sculptural decoration of the park. The Lower Gardens include several autonomous architectural and park ensembles. Each of them has a palace, fountains, level spaces and household nooks. The Peterhof Grand Palace. Peterhof

The Grand Palace is the center of Peterhof’s ensemble at the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. This is a so-called signature residence of Russian royalty. Throughout the 18th and the 19th centuries famous West European and Russian artists worked on architectural design and interior decoration of the Grand Palace. To this day the visitor of the Peterhof Grand Palace admire its magnificence. The Palace is especially beautiful from The Upper and Lower Gardens. But in reality the building itself is quite narrow and is not as big as it seems at the first sight. The Grand Palace consists of 30 halls, including the luxurious grand halls with their faux-marble, incrusted parquet, painted ceilings and gilded walls. The result of non-stop 200 years-long construction is a fabulous palace where simple Petrine rooms neighbor with luxury and glory of the 18th century baroque. Calm and strict classicistic chambers gradually blend in rooms of the mid-19th century, when the art principles of rococo are reborn. The Peterhof Grand Palace was the center of Russia’s official summer life. It is here where important national issues were dealt with. It is here as well where notable guests were taken in; the festivities, masquerades and balls were organized. Today the Peterhof Grand Palace is a unique historical and art museum, which includes paintings, furniture, fabrics, candelabra and utensils of the royal family’s tastes.

The Catherine Palace. Pushkin

This majestic 306 meters-long building is a former Emperors’ palace and an official residence of three Russian monarchs, who owed it in the 18th century and paid great attention and money on construction. Being based on lighting effects and decorative contrasts, the architectural image of the Catherine Palace amazed its contemporaries by its magnificence. Different artistic styles can be traced in the Palace’s interiors; the main two are baroque and classicism. Unfortunately, private rooms of the royal family did not survive till our days. The biggest part of the Palace was not restored after the Great Patriotic war. During the World War II the residence suffered even more. However, nowadays the Palace is restored and is open for tourists.

The Gatchina Palace. Gatchina

Gatchina Palace was founded in 1766 at the place of Count Grigori Orlov’s manor. The Palace was built by a famous architect Antonio Rinaldi. Initially, the Palace reminded a hunting castle and had an underpass. As many other palaces, Gatchina Palace changed its owners quite frequently, and every time the new owner rebuilt the Palace in accordance with their tastes and habitudes. One of the owners of Gatchina Palace was Tsar Paul I, who under the guidance of V. Brenna, the architect, started rebuilding the Palace. Working premises, trussed arches, marble columns, throne rooms and many other things were added to the Palace. Some time later the Emperor’s family inherited the Palace and in 1845 they ordered the architect R. Kuzmin to renovate the main building of the Palace and to increase the number of private premises. After the October Revolution Gatchina Palace became a national museum and held around 54 thousand priceless showpieces. Unfortunately, during the World War II the Palace suffered considerably, its interior décor was almost completely lost. The museum’s employees managed to save only about one fifth of all the showpieces.

Travel agency "Prestige - tour" was very helpful with travel organization in St. Petersburg! Thank you for a fabulous hotel, a fascinating your program has given us the most pleasant emotions and a great vacation! Special thanks to the manager for the attentive and friendly attitude to the customers!

Randomly stumbled upon a travel agency prestige. Very quickly it works (my visa expires in 2 weeks, and in three days I managed to arrange and prepare the tour and I happily left for Russia). Hotel shuttle service and program - all as promised. I liked very much. Thank you!

Denny & Mary

Excellent travel agency! All promise - fulfilled. Like the guide - translator. Very sociable girl. Such concerns we have never experienced, even traveling for a long time. High excursion service! Always everything was done on time. Chose budget hotel, and feels, as a minimum standard plus. Bravo!

Ann & Kathrin

With daughter traveled to St. Petersburg through this travel agency! Impressions - the sea. Particularly pleased with the discount! I recommend!

Periodically fly to Saint - Petersburg to work on short notice. Services of the company used more than once. However, only the hotel and order a transfer, but be sure to order and a tour with the program, I am sure everything will be on top!
